Honoring Eleanor Roosevelt: A Project to Preserve Her Val-Kill Home

We are pleased to announce the addition of important lands to the Home of Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site. Once part of the historic Roosevelt property, the 334-acre parcel between Routes 9 and 9G will reunite the Roosevelt Home to Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill. Transfer of the property to the Park Service was made possible through the efforts of Scenic Hudson, Inc. which purchased the property in 2004 and has worked for several years with the NPS, Town of Hyde Park and Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area to determine its future.

The addition of this Roosevelt Farm and Forest parcel to the Home of FDR NHS certainly ranks among the most significant developments in the site’s preservation. The property will be the site of a restored Roosevelt Farm Lane to open next year with shuttle transportation between the Home, the FDR Library and Museum and Val-Kill. The Farm Lane travels through historic tree plantations developed by FDR himself and is part of the Hyde Park Trail network.
